Viega supported me through much of my time as a student. Through a co-operation agreement with the Fachhochschule Südwestfalen college, I gained an initial practical insight into the subject of Lean Management while on my bachelors course in combined engineering and business studies. That initial contact led to a six-month internship at the Attendorn-Ennest location, during which I attended a number of workshops in the Viega:fit (Lean Management) department which affirmed my leaning towards the subject. On resuming my studies, I subsequently completed my bachelors degree dissertation – likewise based on Lean Management methodology – at Viega's Elspe plant. My contacts with the company were maintained throughout my postgraduate masters degree studies at the Technical University of Dortmund. I regularly received the "Viega Intern" in-house newspaper, so I was kept up-to-date on all the key happenings, and my already very good impression of the company was strengthened further.
As I was concluding my studies, I was offered the opportunity to write my masters thesis at the company's main site in Attendorn. Based on the many different insights I had gained at the various company locations, it was clear to me that Viega had to be the top choice for my first career step, and that is what ultimately happened. I initially underwent an attractive 18-month trainee programme in Supply Chain Development & Controlling, which provided me with the opportunity to attend lots of interesting and helpful seminars. I was also able to gather experience of other areas of the business, as well as to spend two weeks at the Viega plant in the USA, which allowed me to gain an overview of Viega's global operation. All those experiences were very useful, and meant that upon completing the trainee programme I was well equipped to assume the role of Lean Management Trainer.
