Football stadium with drinking water to meet Champions League standards
The tradition-steeped German football club Union Berlin, whose roots can be traced back to 1906, can look back on a turbulent history. Yet, when the team established itself in the 2nd German football league, one thing was clear to fans and those in charge alike: The stadium was in desperate need of renovation and expansion to make it fit for the professional league.
And the results speak for themselves: Following successful renovation, in 2013 the new main stand was officially opened. In the second highest German league, the 1.FC Union Berlin stadium is today regarded as a jewel. And in terms of preserving drinking water quality, it is already in the Champions League.
36 flushing stations ensure high drinking water quality
Especially in football stadiums maintaining a good drinking water quality is a particularly critical issue. Either thousands of litres are used simultaneously during the half-time break or nothing happens for days or even weeks. The drinking water thus stagnates in the extensive pipelines and the risk of contamination is almost inevitable.
This is not the case with Union Berlin: Alongside the needs-based design of the cellar and riser pipes (Sanpress Inox) and connections to the individual extraction points (Raxofix), 36 flushing stations with Viega Hygiene+ function were also installed. The stations are programmed to exchange the complete contents of the pipe network every 72 hours. The flush volume is tailored to the size of the pipe section in order to rule out any risk of stagnant water.
Flushing also occurs automatically if cold water warms up to more than 20°C due to stagnation or, inversely, hot water cools down to less than 50°C. The date and timing of the flushing processes are not only saved but the flush volume and the temperatures before and after flushing are also documented in the interests of system optimisation.
