Harley Davidson Motodrome

It's all action at the Harley Davidson Motodrome in Klagenfurt, Austria, yet the climate is always just right. This is in part thanks to Viega’s surface heating and cooling systems. (Photo: Harley Davidson)

An ambience to match cult, clothing and coolness

For true Harley Davidson bikers a motorbike is a statement, an attitude towards life, the technical blend of cult and culture. For biker fans in the Austrian state of Carinthia and the surrounding area a new "cathedral" dedicated to this literally resounding bike brand has been opened in Klagenfurt – the Harley Davidson Motodrome. A new showroom was developed directly next to an existing building which has been converted into a workshop. This showroom presents the latest bikes over two floors alongside the coolest of accessories. To guarantee a visually and technically ideal shopping environment, Fonterra surface heating and cooling systems were installed in the ceiling, walls and floor.

Hot stuff under the cooling ceiling

To allow customers to try on the warm motorbike clothing in the busy and also hot summer months, the surface heating and cooling system under the roof is designed as a cooling ceiling. After all, given the open connection between the two floors, the majority of the heat load forms on the top floor. Around 230 m² of Fonterra Top 12 were assembled using the dry construction method. Two connected air/water heat pumps discharge a cooling load of 13 kW: The ceiling tempering system is made from plaster board using the conventional dry construction method. A PB-pipe (12 x 1.3 mm) has been integrated at the factory into each system panel as a cooling and heater battery.

The same system panels used as Fonterra Side 12 in the ancillary rooms provide wall heating for the winter months. Yet the majority of the heating load is provided by the floor heating from the Fonterra Base 15 system. It comprises studded panels to be covered by cement floating screed. In the colder months, the cooling ceiling also becomes a heating ceiling thanks to the inverter function of the heat pumps.

Perfect climate conditions

The advantages of precisely aligned surface heating and cooling: Heating and cooling is far more energy- and cost-efficient than a combination of radiators and air-conditioning system. What's more, the walls in the stylish bike showroom can be freely designed and also used for shelving.
