Quality and value from start to finish
The world’s largest solar power plant, located in the southwestern USA, constructed in 2013, spans 1,900 acres and has a 280-megawatt capacity – enough to power 70,000 homes while avoiding approximately 475,000 tons of carbon dioxide output.
Viega’s stainless steel piping system Sanpress Inox (US standard) was hard-specified in the construction plans and multiple contractors installed the system for process water, service water and instrumentation air systems.
At any given time during construction, there were as many as 2,000 installers at the site. MMC Contractors acted as the lead contracting company for the Sanpress Inox installation. Although MMC had prior experience with Viega’s copper press system, the customer arranged training with Viega representatives for all of the contractors installing the system.
Sanpress Inox: cost-effective and easy to use
"Our team’s training on Sanpress Inox was quick and easy, but it was also thorough," said Jim Ed Thompson, Project Superintendent at MMC Contractors, who estimates a 30% savings on materials and labour. "Pressing with the Viega system provides tremendous time savings and makes the entire setup process much more flexible." By using Sanpress Inox, MMC’s installers saved a significant amount of time per fitting and installed more than 15,000 feet of stainless steel piping as well as more than 2,000 fittings.
"Overall cost was important but the customer also needed materials that were quick and consistent to install and offered low maintenance," Dan Goellner, Industrial Account Manager at Viega explained. "The goal was to be able to put it together and go." Viega sales, technical support and training representatives worked seamlessly with all involved on the job, from planning through implementation, providing for a smooth installation.
"Because of how cost-effective and consistent the system was for this project, it’s being used on a second solar power plant construction project," explained Goellner. "The project team had so many good things to report about it."
